Cox made her acting debut in the short Betty Anderson in 2000 and starred in her first feature film The Kings of Brooklyn in 2004. She has starred as Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black since 2013. Cox has also starred in the movies Uncle Stephanie, Bronx Paradise, Carla, Musical Chairs, The Exhibitionists, 36 Saints, and Grand Street. In 2014 Cox won a Rising Star Award from the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association. She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
